Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism Orientation and Protocols Baptisms are performed at the request of the family. Baptisms in Spanish are performed every month by the parish Deacon. Those wishing the pastor to celebrate the baptism must schedule an appointment through the office. Baptisms in English are performed during the English Mass and mission of your choosing so that the Christian community may rejoice and share in this special grace in our community. Once the necessary baptismal preparations are completed please contact the parish office to schedule the baptism. To have your child baptized, the parents and Godparents must attend a class and then schedule a baptism date with the parish office. Classes for parents and Godparents are given the third Wednesday of every month in Spanish in a different mission. Please see the attached scheduled for the year. Baptismal classes in English are held at your convenience, please contact the parish office. Those wishing a visiting deacon or priest to perform the ceremony must seek permission and canonical delegation from the pastor. It is the responsibility of the family to provide any monetary support to this deacon or priest. The suggested offering to the parish is $ 40.00. The deacon or priest does not receive a stipend for this service as promulgated by diocesan regulations. Please note: Canon Law does not permit a child over the catechetical age of 7 to be baptized without the other sacraments of initiation. This child must be enrolled in the parish religious education program and the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children (RCIA). Please contact the Office and Religious Education Director for more information. Depending upon age this process may last one – two years. Requirements to be a Godparent or Sponsor for Confirmation If there are two godparents, one must be male and the other female. A single godparent may be of either sex. It may happen that parents want two person of the same sex to be godparents and they have good reasons for this. A possible solution to such a case is to register one as the official godparent, while the other would assume only the cultural and familial customs connected with the role. Likewise it is common for some to ask if they can have more than two persons. Unfortunately, the Code of Canon Law permits a maximum of two, you may have others in the ceremony, but please realize that only two people will be entered into the baptismal register and on the certificate. Qualifications of Godparents
The Godparents’ duty is not only to be present for the celebration of the sacrament, but it is a lifelong responsibility to help the baptized lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it (can. 872).
We do not recommend 2 non-Catholic witnesses. A baptized Catholic cannot be considered a Christian witness if he or she is not confirmed. |
